Melanoma Awareness for Teens

The Tampa (FL) Tribune (5/1, Shedden) reports, “The American Cancer Society estimates 3.5 million Americans will be diagnosed with basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers in 2012,” while “an additional 76,250 will be told they have melanoma, the more serious skin cancer responsible for a majority of the more than 12,000 annual deaths.” Dermatologist James Spencer, MD, chairman of the American Academy of Dermatology’s skin cancer committee, said “teens need to know the consequences of treating basal cell and squamous skin cancer can be painful.” During “Melanoma May,” Spencer and other dermatologists across the country will be pushing the message to adolescents and young adults that UV rays, whether acquired in the tanning booth or at the beach, may result in melanoma as well as in other skin cancers.

Melanoma Among Women- New Study

Analysis: Women With Melanoma Appear To Have 30% Survival Advantage.
According to a recent post from The American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatology Daily, a recent study shows the following for women who received a melanoma diagnosis:
Reuters (5/2, Grens) reports that according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, women who receive a melanoma diagnosis appear to have an increased likelihood of surviving it as well as a decreased likelihood for recurrence, compared to men, according to an analysis published online April 30 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.“By almost every measure, an analysis of four European studies found that women can expect a 30 percent better outcome than men following an early stage melanoma diagnosis,” HealthDay (5/2, Mozes) reports. “The sole exception was seen in cases of head and neck melanomas, where the gender differences disappeared.” Still, based on the study’s overall findings, the authors hypothesized that “gender differences with respect to vitamin D metabolism, immune system function, male testosterone levels and what is known as ‘oxidative stress’ in the body” may all play a role in explaining the gender gap in melanoma patients.

New Rules for Sunscreen Labels

The FDA has issued a Final Rule on the labeling and testing of sunscreen products.
The rule establishes that:
-A sunscreen product may only be labeled “Broad Spectrum” if the product has an SPF of greater than 15 and passes the new Broad Spectrum testing requirements.
-SPF products may not be labeled as “Waterproof”, “Sweatproof,” “Sunblock,” or “all day”.
-Water resistance claims are permitted if the sunscreen remains effective for 40 or 80 minutes while swimming or seating.
-All SPF products must include a Drug Facts Panel.
This rule will be completely established by June 2013. Keep these facts in mind while choosing a sunscreen!

New Research About SPF

A recent article from the AAD says, “Sunscreen lotions with a sun protection factor (SPF) value of 70 or above provide better protection than those with an SPF of 30 or 50, even when under-applied,” according to a study published online April 1 in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
It’s interesting that even when a sunscreen with an SPF of 70 was under applied, it still had better results than properly using a sunscreen with a lesser SPF. Keep that in mind when you are out and about this season! We want you to remain protected and educated about sun protection! Skin Cancer Among Young Adults

USA Today released an article stating that, “A dramatic rise in skin cancer rates among young adults is leading health officials to shed light on the risk factors, specifically tanning salons, which women are more likely to use.” In fact, “according to the National Institutes of Health, excess exposure to ultraviolet light increases risk for all skin cancers. UV light is invisible radiation that can damage DNA in the skin and can be generated by the sun, sunlamps and tanning beds.”
Warthan Dermatology Center recommends everyone to stay protected, and avoid tanning beds. If you want to be tan for prom, banquet, or any other special occasion this Spring, use a sunless tanning product such as Tan Towels, which do not expose you for the harmful UV rays. Wear sunscreen everyday too!

Progress in Melanoma Vaccine

The American Academy of Dermatology has reported progress in creating a vaccine against Melanoma. Richard Vile author of Nature Biotechnology says, “We believe that this new techniuqe will help us to identify a whole new set of genes that encode antigens that are important in stimulating the immune system to reject cancer.” (AAD Daily, 3/23/12). At present, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than 2 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are found in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 75,000 cases of skin cancer in 2012, according to The American Cancer Society.
Warthan Dermatology Center encourages you to be sun smart! Wear a sunscreen everyday on your face, chest, arms, and other areas that are exposed to the sun. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. When you are in the sun for a prolonged period of time, make sure you are wearing a wide brimmed hat to limit exposure to your face, ears, neck, and chest. We also recommend that everyone receive a skin check once a year!

Mercury in Over the Counter Products

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the FDA has recently pulled several over the counter products from the market. The AAD reports, “Consumers should avoid skin lighteners, ‘anti-aging’ creams, and other cosmetics that may contain toxic levels of mercury, the FDA advised in an alert issued Thursday.” Products with these ingredients, “‘mercurous chloride,’ ‘calomel,’ ‘mercuric,’ ‘mercurio,’ or ‘mercury’ among their ingredients — or that don’t list ingredients in English, or at all — should not be used, the FDA warned.” This alert came after the Minnesota Department of Health tested 27 products marketed as skin lighteners, finding that 11 exceeded the FDA’s allowable limit.
